This page explains, in plain terms, what AI assistants and AI agents are, how they differ when you are running a home, and where you stay in charge. It follows one household example from start to finish.
An AI assistant is a program you converse with. You write a request, it writes a reply, and nothing happens in the outside world unless you take the reply and act on it yourself. That makes it a good fit for thinking tasks around the house: sorting a list, explaining a letter in simpler words, drafting a short message to a neighbour or suggesting a sensible order for jobs.
Assistants can be wrong, can misread what you meant and can state something confidently that is untrue. They also do not know your household unless you tell them, and they cannot see your diary, your cupboards or your accounts. Treat a reply as a draft from a quick, well-read helper who has never visited your home.
An AI agent is set up to take a series of steps towards a goal, not just to reply. Given permission, it might check a calendar for free evenings, draft an invitation and place a reminder. The key phrase is given permission: an agent acts only through the tools and access it has been handed.
Because actions can have consequences, such as a message reaching the wrong person, a sensible set-up keeps the agent's reach small and asks you to confirm anything that leaves your own space. This site does not offer an agent and does not describe how any specific product works. It explains the idea so that you can judge what you are offered elsewhere.
Whichever kind of helper you use, some decisions are yours alone.
This is a teaching example, not a record of a real household.
Example only Not a real conversation
A useful answer has four parts, in this order:
Your check: read the repeated commitments first, then confirm times and travel, and correct any guess. If an agent were used for the same task, it might add the entries to a calendar. A careful set-up would show you each entry first and wait for your approval.
| Household task | An assistant fits when | An agent might fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly plan | You want a draft order for the week to review | You have allowed it to add confirmed entries to a calendar |
| Shopping list | You want meals and a grouped list drafted | You allow it to prepare a basket for you to review, not to pay |
| Family event | You need a running order and a jobs list | You allow it to draft invitations, to be sent only after you approve |
| Support call | You want questions and a date summary | Rarely needed; the call itself stays yours |
None of this guarantees a good result. Quality depends on how clearly you describe the task, on the tool you use and on whether you check the output. The plain rule is that a helper may propose, but you decide. For more on a single task, read the weekly planning guide, or return to the home page.
